This course explores the different varieties of English spoken in different parts of the world. It discusses the notion of variation and varieties, variation of English due to attitude, level of education, topic and medium; regional varieties, standard English and dialects, general criteria for standardization, English as a native language, English as a first language, English as a second language, English as a foreign language, English as an international language, functions of English, different varieties of English in the world. Some of the varieties to be discussed include the varieties of English spoken in the British Isles (British English), the varieties of English spoken in the Americas(American and Canadian English) and the Caribbean (Caribbean English), the varieties of English spoken in Africa (West African English, East African English, and Southern African English),the varieties of English spoken in South and Southeast Asia (Chinese English, Indian English), the varieties of English spoken in the Pacific and Australia (Australian and new Zealand English) and the development of creoles and pidgins from English; Impact of Technology on English.
