This course aims at providing students with the foundation of writing skills needed for academic work at university level. Students are introduced to writing as a skill, and different types of writing, focusing mainly on academic and functional writing. The focus for academic writing is to train students in writing a research paper using the ten steps systematically. They will be introduced to using the library and the internet for research purposes. The focus for functional writing is to assist students prepare documents such as CV/Resume, job application letter, reports, memos, minutes, etc. A variety of writing techniques and ample practice is provided through writing exercises. Students will also practice tasks such as book or movie review, writing paragraphs, writing an autobiography as an essay, etc. The concept of plagiarism is discussed and students are guided on how to avoid it during the research process.
