This course introduces the history, theories, issues of development and underdevelopment; explain the meaning of development and underdevelopment; their external and internal agents; the meaning of corruption, and the solution(s) to Third world underdevelopment. It places focus on how the incorporation of non-Western countries into the productive system of global capitalism has disrupted, distorted, and shaped the political organization and cultural identity of Third World states. It also provides a comprehensive survey of development thinking from ‘classical’ development ideas to alternative and post-development theories. The course then attempts to critically review contemporary debates about development, including the link between modernity and development, participation, empowerment, gender. Not forgetting the positive contribution of the MNCs and the Globalization and democratization of the South-South (South-Saharan Africa). It is delivered online via UEAB virtual learning platform.
