This course is designed to develop and deepen the students’ appreciation of children’s literature as a literary form. This course provides an opportunity for students to read, analyze, synthesize, and understand quality children’s literature. It examines pre-school, pre-adolescent, and adolescent written children’s literature from diverse backgrounds (African, European, Oriental). Selected texts are read and analyzed in terms of form, content, layout, and language use. Students examine folktales and fiction. They are introduced to relevant theoretical material and encouraged to develop independent critical responses to the texts.
