UNIT PURPOSE

This course introduces the student to the concept relating to implementing care to patients at risk.  Assessment and examination techniques are utilized in determining the variables that place clients at risk.  Triage principles are utilized to determine clients who need priority care.  Students are guided to acquire appropriate knowledge and skills needed to provide safe care to clients with medical surgical and gynaecologic emergencies. 

Supervised experience is provided in ENT clinic, Eye clinic, Emergency filter treatment rooms, Injection room and Dermatology clinic. Tropical diseases and basic life support are also included.  This course prepares students for the intensive care and high dependency experience.

Guided experience in the following areas is provided by medical officers, clinical officers, nursing officers, and clinical instructors.

  • Injection room
  • Eye clinic
  • Emergency/treatment rooms              
  • Dermatology clinic/lung and skin
