COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course introduces the student to basic concepts in nuclear medicine. It is intended for medical laboratory science students in their third year of study. IT involves Introduction to radioactive decay mechanisms.  Includes radiation spectra, detectors, gas filled solid-state scintillations and detectors. Thyroid uptake of radioactive iodine and other radioisotope tests of renal function, vitamin B12 absorption.  The effect of radiation on the cell and mammalian tissues will be studied.  Exposure to Geiger Muller counter, radiation dosimeters, film badges, ionization chamber, safe laboratory practice and care of radioisotope patients.
