This course introduces a biblical understanding of the role of the Pastor as counselor. Basic counseling skills such as listening, empathy, problem definition and clarification, and use of the Bible are introduced. Alternate counseling strategies and formats are covered. A biblical perspective on the issues covered such as suicide, grief and bereavement, oppression, pain, anxiety and depression will be presented. Counseling techniques appropriate for multinational society and enhancing Christian standards are explored in order to develop and sharpen the counseling techniques and skills needed for effective pastoral counseling specifically within an African context.
