This course explores factors in first language acquisition and their application to the teaching and learning of English as a Second language in formal and non-formal situations. The course provides a solid foundation in second language acquisition. Some of the topics to be covered include meaning of language acquisition and language learning, theories of language acquisition, theories of language learning, stages of SLA, Factors that influence SLA, Stephen Krashen’s Theories of SLA; concepts of error and mistakes in language learning; Language transfer, L2 learning and teaching, language teaching methods, Findings in SLA research and how these have influenced language learning and teaching ; Syllabus design and choice of materials; SLA in Kenya.
